Principles of forms and compositions. blacks and whites. drawing, paint or collage. When I was given this brief I honestly dreaded the thought of creating a structured piece of work with strict guidelines of only using geometric shapes. I'm going to be honest, I dislike using strong geometrics in any of my designs. I have always loved loose organic free-flowing lines. Trying to convey a message not using detailed painting and realism but shapes was a challenge. I am not too happy with how it turned out but I loved the process and that is what is most important to me. I based this piece round key themes I picked up on in my poem of communication and contrast. Communication not meaning the way we verbally talk to one another but the way we express ourselves. What you wear to work for example is so important because it gives a statement to the world about who you are and what you care about. How you dress a lot of the time communicates also what your interests are and the persona you give off. The haiku was about the famous fashion designer Mary Katrantzou. In her spring 2019 ‘ready to wear line’ she used postage stamps. Looking deeper into this bold choice I realised she wanted to show the old school meaning of communication. Paper and pen. Postage stamp and envelope. Hence this inspired my postage stamp border. I constructed this using a ruled straight line and a protractor to construct the semi-circle. As for the geometric shapes I was symbolising how we all try to be the same. Think the same. Dress the same. The triangles all pointing towards the point of salience being the circle. Notice how no triangles can touch the circle? This is as we need to be our authentic self. We can not be a circle when we are a triangle! We have to be unique in our ways. Contrast defines the geometric shapes making them stand out on the white paper. This is created using positive and negative spaces. All geometric shapes the negative space with union seen between two triangles and the thick-lined semi-circle. The composition was created by trying to roughly use the rule of thirds. With the circle being placed in the top right-hand corner. Weight and scale were placed on the circle. Unfortunately, when I was in a rush leaving halls due to coronavirus I left a large portion of my lecture worksheets and notes in my room not thinking about how I haven't scanned them and only took my notes binder. My original sketches from design 101 lectures and tutorial I can't upload until I am back but here are the photos of the process I went through in order. #des101
