Assignment 1 - Digital Experiments

Design Sprint Processes

Assignment 1 for Design 200 was designed for pressure. How would we face short design challenges in the workplace? Through prototyping, testing into a final digital experiment over 3 weeks we got faced with three exercises of UX/UI, 3D modelling and VR spaces.

The design process is crucial to keeping good time management the last 3 weeks have shown me. it has helped me keep on track during these short sprints. I followed a template on Miro to ensure I was completing to the best of my ability and ticking off all the boxes. Before I began although I did a few reflections and thought carefully about who I wanted my design panel to be so I could get in contact with them early.

UX/UI Exercise

We were tasked with the concept of 're-imaging the UX/UI of Auckland Transport's mobile app for a 6-year-old version of ourself.' With complete control of this brief we got to choose the experience we wanted our 6 year old user to have.

After Receiving this brief my honest first thoughts were I have no idea about 6 year old capabilities. I don't know anyone around this age so I knew it was important for me to have to research and ask parents what 6 year olds can and can't do. After research I found that they can read basic sentences

Statement of Intent: Auckland Transport Kids app is to be used when travelling alongside a parent or trusted adult. This app is used to help kids transition to in a years time travelling by themselves. Some highlights:

3D Modelling Exercise

Using Rhino and Blender software we were given the brief to render our favourite childhood toy. I wanted this toy to be educational and something that can be used over and over again. I wanted this toy also to be something that was new and innovative.

Following the design process my final idea was the 'Word Cube'. Combining motor functions, problem solving and letters this toy can be used for all ages. Word cube can be used by yourself or in a group setting. The slogan 'how many word in a minute' encourages users to set a timer and see how many words you can achieve. Some hightlights:

VR Environments Exercise

For the VR component of this assignment we were tasked to reimagine a space from our childhood. Using Mozilla Hubs I recreated a beach in Rarotonga. I feel a personal attachment as my family comes from the Cook Islands. I wanted the space to be relaxing and nostalgic for me. Especially at a time during covid-19 where we can not travel it would be cool to be able to 'travel' virtually from our own home.

Going through the Design Process I came up with the audio, object and aesthetic I was after. I did have other ideas but a beach escape was a manageable outcome for 2 days worth of work. It was my first time creating a VR space by myself so after many YouTube tutorials and trouble shooting this was my final process and outcome.
