assignment 2

Target User:

My little cousin Luke Nelson who is 7 years old

Design Statement:

My findings conclude that Luke needs a lamp that is durable that has a 'wow' factor. He needs it to be interactive and wants it to be different, a new innovation. These ideas have fit in with his mum interests of it being fun but educational and it being a sleek design in his already stylish room.

Visualisation Prototype

By choosing to conduct a visual prototype it allowed my client to give me quick and easy feedback as they could physically see my model and what I was trying to achieve. Unfortunately as I was not in isolation with my cousin he could not physically touch and play with the prototype but instead got videos of the design. Building this prototype emulated why my final design could be. It gave me a rough idea on size and scale and got provided valuable feedback of not having rounded edges. most importantly the prototype worked! Silhouttes are effective.

Specification Prototype

- The lamp will be made using the laser cutter in the fablab as this way I can

- materials needed include

- circuit is powered by an Arduino and lights are sensored

- overall Luke is happy he can read a book and change out the slides to match ! He loves how he can come up with his own story as well

Strengths

- Designed a lamp that Luke my client was happy with! Which was the most rewarding feeling. I filled his need of having a fun multifunctional lamp

- I interviewed both Luke and his Mum. I had a through discovery phase which I believe why the end result was satisfactory

Weaknesses and Challenges

- There were many through out this process which I am grateful for even though at the time they were frustrating! I did complete the fusion360 training which was amazing as I had never seen that side of design before. However I really struggled to use this software and spent a lot of time trying to master it. It was no where near up to standard so I could not show it to my client. This is something I really want to work on in the future. mastering planes and sketch mode!

- When creating my visual prototype I was very limited to the materials I had due to Covid19. All materials were from around my home so adjustments has to be made.

- Not being able to bounce off my lecturers and peers. I love being surrounded by creative people it was definitely missed! The virtual office hours, training and online classes although came a very close second as I got to meet so many new people in breakout rooms as well as lecturers I probably wouldn't have ended up taking to.

- could not work out how to use a battery in Tinkercad and still be able to keep it as a sensor light

- My client not being able to physically see size and scale of the prototype and test it for himself

Overall this assignment pushed me a lot! I have never worked with circuits, fusion360, illustrator for laser cutting let alone complete a full design process! Looking back at it im proud to have produced something for a family member I deeply care about which also has cultural meaning to both of us.
