presence - 2

“The subjective experience of being in one place or environment even when physically situated in another”

In todays lecture we learnt about mixed reality technology and how it involves simulating sensory input. in virtual reality is important to create a sense of presence. this being spatial presence, object presence and social presence.

The Goal of Virtual Reality is to make it feel like you’re actually in a place that you are not. Creating the Illusion of Reality. We can fool human perception by using technology to generate artificial sensations such as computer generated sights, sounds, smell, etc. In order to create a strong sense of Presence we need to understand the Human Perception system. There are 5 major senses but learnt there are more then 5. The main ones are although:

We need to be able to use technology to provide real world sensory inputs, and create the VR illusion.

the key system design elements which include display, tracking and input create this. Input can be contributed by a controller

I found this interesting video on creating a sense of presence in VR as it explained it very simply.

I also was interested in the possibility VR can hold for us in the further and this video really excited me with the capability's it can hold. Futuristic videos like this also motivate me to keep progressing my skills as I want to be apart of the change and growing AR and VR realitys.

During the tutorial portion of the lecture, lecturer Prasanth outlined and explained the basics of unity. this ensures we have the background knowledge before we tackle any larger tasks. I learnt new vocabulary including the menu bars we use of scene, hierarchy, project, inspector in order to create a basic scene. I am already finding unity quite difficult to navigate due to having no prior knowledge in gaming or a program similar to this. I was quite happy just to create a 3D cube and sphere and getting my cube to drop by enabling gravity.
