spark ar - 1

Updated: Sep 2, 2020

design 241. im sitting eagerly in class on my first week back at university. i cant wait to delve into our first lecture. thoughts are running through my mind although of what is mixed realties and what am i getting myself into this semester?

we start off by hearing from Mark Billinghurst. He is an established mixed realities designer who did an amazing presentation about the different uses of AR, VR, MR and XR. Mr Billinghurst explained the difference in each of the different design forms. The entire lecture i was on the edge of my seat. holding onto every word the lecturers were saying. i found VR fascinating but ultimately AR really wowed me with the possibility it has to change the world as we know it.

after the formal lecture we got to try out AR and VR in the classroom. for me this was my first time trying VR. it was incredible! i got to fully immerse myself in google maps. i was travelling the world without leaving the design studio! there was also colouring in pages that we could draw on and scan with our smart phone to watch our drawing come to life. my favourite experience although was walking the plank in the VR world. from this i realised how real VR feels. It felt truely like i was walking a plank 15 stories up from the ground. i could hear the wind blowing and felt my legs shaking with fear!

at the end of the lecture we learnt about the spark ar app. it is a powerful ar tool our technical experiment this week was to use the spark ar app to create a AR filter for facebook and instagram camera. i was very lucky with this week as i already have had experience using this app. i currently have 6 published filters on instagram and i am currently publishing a filter for a business as promotional material.

here is some work ive done in the past...

this week i had so much fun with this brief of experimenting on the app.

i wanted to create something that would fit with my aesthetic to upload onto my personal instagram account for others to use. i try and use 'trending' fashion, animals or aesthetics. i do research daily on pinterest to see what styles are 'in' then place my own twist on it by creating an ar filter. at the moment i noticed their was alot of dragon and snake designs circulating on my feed. i decided i wanted to draw a dragon and a snake around my eyes with eyelashes. i wanted this filter to be pretty for the user by adding face smoothing and a bit of eyeliner also.

here is the final product below:
